This morning I came downstairs at 6 am. I had just finished nursing baby3 (6 weeks old), and as usual, my stomach was growling. I grabbed the usual bowl of cereal and started my typical morning routine of scanning facebook for interesting status updates.
An old friend from college posted this simple question: "iPhone or Android?"
That question, like the Mac vs. PC conundrum, was bound to spark controversy. Everybody seems to be polarized in their opinions on smartphones. That wasn't surprising to me.
What surprised me was how passionately I felt about this question. I had no idea that I felt such strong emotions about a small rectangular piece of plastic (is it plastic, actually? I really have no idea). For some weird reason, I felt compelled to explain in exquisite detail all the reasons I prefer Android over iPhone. Somebody else posted, "Friends don't let friends buy iPhones," and I agreed. I felt like I had some sort of responsibility to persuade him he should buy an Android phone.
Which is silly. He should buy whatever he wants, because he has his own libre arbitre, free will; his choices are only limited by the depth of his wallet.
I found myself writing tldr ("too long, didn't read") posts on his facebook page. Seriously. Like at least five of them. Embarrassed to write yet ANOTHER post, I resorted to sending him a facebook message with even MORE details. I even convinced my husband to post his feelings on the subject. We are united in love and smartphone OS's.
But there are limits to how much can be written on this subject on a friend's facebook page (and I'm pretty sure I exceeded that limit at post #2). I decided I would check to see if the URL http://www.momdroid.blogspot.com was taken, thinking, "Yeah, right." But then, it wasn't!
I have a passion for being a stay home mom. I love my kids and my home. I love my husband. And guess what? I also love my Android phone. WHY NOT COMBINE ALL THREE INTO AN AWESOME BLOG OF AWESOMENESS!?
This will be my tech blog for 2012, and FWIW, I am not particularly techie. I love blogging. I know some html. At one point I knew some java. I am married to a programmer. But mostly, my computer and my phone are things I use throughout my day. They can be helpful mom tools (as well as distractions from good mothering). I LOVE reading real peoples' opinions on the tools I use. It's almost like..."Wow, somebody else has thought about how stupid it is that such and such an app's buttons are in the upper right corner instead of the bottom left?" It's like...permission to be OCD.
Basically, I figure that there are a lot of other moms that, like me, enjoy reading about technology and how it effects their daily lives. But in a non techie jargon way. So that is what this blog will be: an outlet for me to indulge in my nerdy attention to detail, which is basically the cause of my passion for Android phones.
So here's to motherhood, smartphones, and blogs about both!
